Sturridge's foundation
With both grandparents being Jamaican, Liverpool football club's lead striker, Daniel Sturridge, is finally fulfilling his dream of giving back to Jamaica by launching his foundation in Portmore. The launch is scheduled for tomorrow at the Faith Basic School in Waterford, St Catherine.
Communications company Digicel will be the lead sponsor of this venture and sponsorship manager, Tahnida Nunes, said in a release yesterday that they were happy to be on board with Sturridge.
"Digicel is very happy to be on board with Daniel Sturridge and his family on this venture for a number of reasons. We are also very happy that through this initiative, we can make a direct contribution to the Faith Basic School in the amount of $500,000."
Sturridge has also expressed his gratitude to Digicel ahead of tomorrow's launch.
Spain hits 10
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP):
In a one-sided match at the Confederations Cup, World Cup winners Spain routed the Pacific islanders from Tahiti 10-0 yesterday - a result that wasn't as bad as some had suggested beforehand.
Tahiti coach Eddy Etaeta said he feared Spain might score 15 or 20. Still, the winning margin was the largest in a Confederations Cup match. The previous record margin was six, when Brazil beat Saudi Arabia 8-2 in 1999 and when Brazil beat Australia 6-0 in 1997.
Fernando Torres, who missed a penalty late in the match, scored four goals. David Villa added three goals, David Silva two and Juan Mata one.
Mahan shoots 62
CROMWELL, Connecticut (AP):
Hunter Mahan has the early lead after shooting an opening-round 62 at the Travelers Championship, toying with a 59 with three holes left before finishing with pars yesterday.
Mahan, who won the event in 2007 and has two second-place finishes in 11 previous starts, has a three-stroke lead at the TPC River Highlands.
Mahan says he began thinking about a possible 59 at the seventh hole, calling it "the most comfortable course on Tour." Camilo Villegas, John Merrick and Web Simpson shot 5-under 65s.
