WESTERN BUREAU:

The Montego Bay Yacht Club was the scene of food, Christmas festivity and donations in support of new equipment for the Cornwall Regional Hospital's (CRH) paediatric ward, on Monday evening.

Organised by the We Care for Cornwall Regional Hospital Foundation, the function was held to raise US$175,000 for new equipment and improvements to CRH's paediatric facilities. Members of Montego Bay's business, medical and legal community were invited to take part.

Very pleased

A preliminary count of money earned towards the fund-raising goal is US$30,000 in direct cash donations or monetary pledges, excluding proceeds from purchased dinners at the event.

"We were very pleased with the start; it was our first try, and the people really came out for us," We Care director Eleanor Miller declared.

"I think we got a good crowd, and I think they had a good evening and they enjoyed themselves. They came and they had a good time, so we shall do it again. It's not a one-off thing, and we have to continue."

Miller observed that the drive to improve CRH's facilities will, by extension, improve the condition of health care for the wider community.

"We're hoping to build awareness through functions like this, for the community to understand that the hospital needs their support. The hospital also needs people who will give of their time, come and read to the children, and go and help the nursing staff care for the kids of Montego Bay," she added.
