On the mound - Being shipwrecked never felt so good!
The pirate theme was the order of the day (and of the mound) as Appleton Jamaica Rum brings back Appleton Mound Mania with Shipwrecked on the Mound 2011 theme, which was launched at its home at Sabina Park on Monday. In keeping with the pirate theme, the HMS Spirit pirate ship will be the place to be when the willow meets the leather. Media personnel were given a digital look of what the finished product will look like. Not having any international cricket come to our shores last year, the return of the mound is most appreciated as World Cup champions India take on the Windies.
Peter 'Skele' Green of organisers Caribbean Sports Marketing said (unapologetically) that this was the party stand by which all other stands are judged. He subsequently pointed out that all attempts to copy their model had failed. All agreed there's no matching the revelry of the mound. Danielle Stiebel, event manager, said the new stand would unite Mound Veterans with new Mound Raiders. If you haven't been to the most fun spot in cricket in a while, there are some nifty new additions (apart from the sails and pirate gear you will see). Among them is a swimming pool, real fruit trees and an Internet cafe, with patrons also gaining access to the swanky Port Royal lounge. Throw in food from Juici Patties and Scotchie's (some of their spicy creations were devoured at the launch) and the mound just got better. Shiver me timbers!
Guests out included MCs DJ Bambino and Paula-Ann Porter Jones, Nari Williams-Singh, siblings David and Kellie Magnus, entertainer Tami Chynn, Robin and Renee Rickhi, Job Nelson and Anthony Foster.
