The jokes were as plentiful as the vibes on a slightly warm Saturday evening in Russell Heights.

Lions and Leos (the youth arm of the club) gathered for a special event on March 26 to honour Lions Club District Governor June McCatty. Though she was elected to the post last June, the reception came at the end of District Governor's Week. The event was their way of thanking McCatty for her energy, vivacity and exemplary leadership of the Lions movement. As district governor, she is responsible for the entire Caribbean and is the first woman to hold the post.

A few guests wore red, a tribute to 'Lion June's' favourite colour. Gifts were also bestowed upon the smiling guest of honour. MC Dave Scarlett kept the short official segment rolling along with his jokes, evoking some whoops with his rendition of the poem 'Still I Rise' (especially the section referring to 'sexiness'). T

here were plenty more jokes but 'is big people ting' and this is a family paper, after all. McCatty had some whoppers of her own as she pointed out that even parts of her wardrobe (accessories etc) were from fellow Lions. "Except for the shoes, I can't remember where I got those."

She expressed her joy in 'Lionism', which she has been involved in for 30 years and said her tenure was a wonderful one before being loudly reminded that it's not over. But it was all in good fun and the camaraderie between the Lions was pure magic.

And to top it off, music veteran Errol Lee kept guests bouncing with his calypso and reggae selections, Saltfish and Shaving Cream among the many that had guests singing along merrily.
