His smile said it all, Gassan Azan likes having his media friends around. And the MegaMart CEO was making sure they were having a good time at his media appreciation party on Thursday, February 17 at the Terra Nova All Suite Hotel. Azan, not wanting to interrupt an amped up Fab 5 who had the legs moving, hands waving and upper torsos shaking, just took the microphone to say a few words.

"It's not a media appreciation, it's a session," Azan joked, also quipping that he had always wanted to own a business big enough, for which he could afford to hire the band. But it's all love for Fab 5 as Azan recalled that band leader Grub Cooper wrote one of MegaMart's first jingles.

praise for the press

But the praise was all for the fourth estate and Azan said his company had always enjoyed the goodwill of the media and he admitted he has always wondered why that is. He said his staff had reasoned that it was MegaMart's consistent consumer service and that the team is never satisfied. "You don't be number one by being average," he said. He expressed the respect he had for his staff, saying he wouldn't trade them for anything.

The aforementioned Fab 5 had warmed the hearts with their vintage renditions, gradually building the tempo before cranking it up with sweet soca. After Azan's words, the band finished what they started and it was on to some of the latest dancehall before transitioning to some classic Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs favourites.

Guests out included Kerlyn Brown, Tony Young, Tomlin Ellis, Rohan Powell, Alicia Roache, Brian Cummings, Vin McKay, Elon Parkinson, Keisha-Ann Sleight, Nadine McLeod and Karyl Walker.
