TEDx Comes to Jamaica
More than 200 persons attended the inaugural TEDx Jamaica, hosted by The Honourable Chris Blackwell and Dr Rupika Delgoda-Clarke at the University of the West Indies, Mona's Social Sciences Lecture Theatre on Saturday, November 13.
The staging of TEDx Jamaica provided a platform to explore new ideas in various fields. The event was held under the theme, 'Innovation without Boundaries'.
According to the website, "TEDx is a programme of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TED events combine TEDTalks video and live speakers to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group".
Presentation
TEDx is a non-profit organisation committed to "Ideas Worth Spreading" through events. Twenty-five years ago TED began with a four-day conference in Long Beach California, United States, where world leaders and respected thinkers in various industries made an 18-minute presentation to their audience. The presentations were then made available for free on the organisation's website. Past presenters for the international event included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Sir Richard Branson and former England Prime Minister Gordon Brown. TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, United Kingdom.
TEDx, is another arm of TED which allows organisers around the world to execute independent events geared towards generating new ideas.
The Jamaican event featured speakers Robert L. Trivers, university professor, evolutionary biologist, Orlando Patterson, university professor, cultural and historical sociologist, Marvin Hall, founder of Halls of Learning, innovative robotics educator for children and Bruce James, co-founder and president MVP track and field club.
