WESTERN BUREAU: A host of championship hopefuls, organisers and sponsors converged at a reception held at the Iberostar Suites hotel for the start of the 2010 staging of the Iberostar Classic Tennis Tournament from August 26-29.

The tournament, which is in its second year, was staged recently by Iberostar in collaboration with MoBay Tennis, a chapter of Tennis Jamaica, the governing body for the sport in the island.

Tournament director Simon Casserly had high commendations for cash sponsors National Commercial Bank (NCB) Capital Markets, which upped the championship prize money from $150,000 last year to $200,000.

Representing the sponsors, Caribbean Producers' Regional Sales Manager Nigel Casserly, in his address, praised the tournament organisers.

"Iberostar Classic speaks to the best of tennis. It showcases some of the best products on the market, but, most importantly, some of the best players. I am happy to know this has become an annual event. We are going to be in the Iberostar Classic tournament as long as there is a tournament. I look forward to it getting bigger and better," he said.

NCB Capital Markets' Regional Manager Howard Pottinger also spoke highly of the tournament.

"NCB is pleased to be associated with this tournament for a second year," he said. "It is in keeping with the community spirit which NCB is known for."

Among the other sponsors were Globe Insurance Company, Caribbean Storm Protection, Outameni Experience, Nature Valley, Jamaica Broilers, Mystic Mountain and Chukka Caribbean Adventures.
