Hog Aholics are king of the grill Grilled
After a four-year wait, team Hog Aholics finally hit the winning mark at the Appleton Estate All Jamaica Grill-Off, by walking away with the grand prize.
The grill-off, held at Hope Gardens in St Andrew on Saturday, June 5, saw 20 contestants vying to be the best 'griller'. All participants brought out their best and in the end some were rewarded for their hard work.
Grand prize winners, Hog Aholics, received a cheque for $100,000, along with the opportunity to participate in the 2010 American Royal Barbecue to be held in Kansas, United States, and an invitation to participate at the 2010 Cattlemen's BBQ contest.
The team won the People's Choice award with Go For God as runner-up. Best booth went to The Cove.
Whether it is grilled chicken or pork, meat needs a little jazzing up with that special sauce, and Jo Jo's Jerk Pit hit the spot by winning the sauce category. Grill King topped the seafood category, while Hog Aholics won the chicken and beef category prizes. And the pork category prize went to Jo Jo's Jerk Pit.
Bad Dawg Grillaz fired up as they won a few second prizes and were also awarded the Reserve Champion grand prize overall. Throughout the day, there were samples for patrons. But, even though there was ample space, the layout lacked harmony and there were no signs for ticket and bar areas.
Speaking with The Gleaner after the event, the chief judge, Michael A. Compote, said the smoker that was used for grilling, which is ideal for the process, as well as their attention to detail, gave Hog Aholics the edge over the other teams. Compote is the president of the Caribbean BBQ Association.
