More than 150 teachers drawn from 28 schools across St Ann and St Mary were feted at a special Teachers' Day luncheon at Sandals Grande Ocho Rios on their special day.

Apart from the scrumptious meal, teachers received a number of gifts, ranging from day passes to the two of the Sandals properties, to other items, as well as an exciting entertainment package which was well received.

"We have to thank Sandals for this extraordinary gesture," noted Gloria Johnson, principal of Boscobel Primary School, who replied on behalf of the teachers.

"In this time of cutbacks and a recession, it is gratifying that your company continues to make the effort to treat us special, not just today, but throughout the year," Johnson said. "It's something that we really appreciate because we know that you did not have to do it, but you did it out of love."

Louis Grant, general manager of Sandals Dunn's River, lauded the teachers for their extraordinary contribution to education in Jamaica, "and for your special work in moulding the minds of our young people".

"It is often a thankless job," Grant noted, but it is one for which all Jamaica salutes you and we at Sandals are particularly pleased to welcome you."

One of the day's highlights was a special appearance by Sesame Street characters Elmo and Abby Cadabby, who mingled with teachers and provided special photo opportunities.

dance competitions

Boscobel Primary School dancers performed two cultural items thrilling the teachers, who, not to be outdone, participated in male and female dance competitions.

One teacher also received a special prize for the longest tenure in the classroom.

Also in attendance were Peter Fraser, general manager of Royal Plantation, and Howard Spittle, general manager of Beaches Boscobel.
