Question
What do you think can be done to resuscitate the dairy industry here in western Jamaica?
Answers
"First, educate the public on the importance of milk in the diet. Second, take the Drink Real Milk Campaign down to the grass roots and make it exciting and above board."
School principal
"First, we have to identify lands where cows can be reared properly. We also have to get the predial larceny prevention unit on board to protect farmers from thieves, as well as promote the drinking of milk as a viable nutritional option, and lastly, ensure that the small farmers can benefit financially."
Education Officer
"Kill the importation of milk powder. Offer farmers some Brahman and Jamaica Black and White calves because these cattle produce a lot of milk. The also resuscitate dormant dairy farms and offer subsidies so farmers can rebuild. Hotels are ready to take fresh Jamaican milk because ours is a better-quality milk than the imports."
Hotel chef
"Attract the necessary local investment in that area. The private sector needs to get involved. Need to have 'the eat what we grow and grow what we eat.' The small farmers alone cannot do it. Get people to take over Montpelier."
