Douglas rewrites U20 record at New York Showcase
Jamaica’s junior sprint standout Shanoya Douglas broke her own national Under-20 indoor 300 metres record on Saturday, clocking 36.98 seconds to win at the New York International Showcase at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
Douglas led from the start and finished well clear of Breanne Barnett of Baldwin High School in New York, who placed second in 38.08. Rhia Randolph of West Orange High School in New Jersey was third in 38.16.
The winning time also established a new facility record, surpassing the 37.32 set by Elise Cooper of McDonogh School in Maryland at the Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational in 2024.
The 18-year-old Douglas, now representing Holland High School after transferring from Muschett High at the start of the academic year in September to follow longtime coach Gary Smythe, said she was surprised by the performance.
“I did not know that I was running this fast. My aim was to run faster than I did last year,”
Douglas said. “I am very happy.”
Douglas had previously set the national Under-20 record last year when she ran 37.78 seconds in her indoor debut to win the event.
