GAYNSTEAD HIGH School’s senior netballers were in cruise control ahead of Tuesday’s quarterfinal round of the Urban ISSA Schoolgirl Netball Competition after an impressive 41-24 win over defending champions, St Catherine High, on Friday at the Leila Robinson Courts. The victory allowed them to top their group, remaining undefeated so far in the tournament.

The Dalton Hinds-coached team has been demolishing opponents all season and facing the defending champions in their final second-round encounter was no different.

They took control from the opening whistle, rushing into a 12-5 first-quarter lead. Gaynstead continued to outscore their opponents in each quarter, leading 22-11 at halftime, extending to 32-17 after the third quarter, before cruising to an easy 41-24 victory.

It was a double success for Gaynstead on the day, as their junior team bounced back from a midweek loss to Camperdown with a convincing 39-14 win over Ardenne. This result secured second place in their group behind Camperdown and booked a spot in the quarterfinals.

Tracy Ann Griffiths’ Wolmer’s Girls also celebrated a double success, with both their junior and senior teams remaining unbeaten this season, positioning themselves as live threats for both titles.

Their junior team, defending Urban and All-Island champions, stayed on course to retain their titles after brushing aside Excelsior High 21-7 to top their group. The senior team followed with a 41-25 win over Merle Grove, after narrowly edging The Queen’s School 37-34 in an earlier match.

The high-flying Vauxhall senior team, unbeaten all season, was brought down to earth by a well-organised Norman Manley side, losing 26-36
