Door still open for Taylor Hinds
Reggae Girlz coach said defender’s future is not yet decided
HUBERT BUSBY JR, the Reggae Girlz head coach, said Taylor Hinds could still yet represent Jamaica, as her international future is not yet decided, despite her accepting a call-up to the England squad.
Busby was speaking yesterday at a Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) press conference where he announced his squad for their upcoming international friendly against Trinidad and Tobago.
The press conference came two days after Hinds had accepted a call-up to Sarina Wiegman’s England squad for a pair of international friendlies against Brazil and Australia.
Busby fielded questions about Hinds’ previous commitment to Jamaica and said the situation is ‘up in the air’.
“I think she’s actually alluded to that. Her future is up in the air and she hasn’t made a final decision yet,” he said.
“We respect that. We’ve had numerous conversations and communications up to yesterday, and we respect her decision at this time.”
Busby referred to Hinds’ comments on social media where she explained she felt proud to have been able to represent both England and Jamaica.
“It’s a privilege to have two nationalities and I’m incredibly proud to represent both. I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for Jamaica,” the defender wrote. “They’ve been so understanding and genuinely want the best for me, which means a lot.
“Being called up to represent England is an amazing feeling and opportunity. I know what it means to wear the shirt, to be a Lioness, and it truly means everything to me and my family.”
A dual-national, Hinds had represented England throughout her youth career but opted to represent Jamaica at the senior level, making her debut for the Reggae Girlz last year.
However, she only played one game for Jamaica, a 4-0 loss to France.
Busby explained the process of handling her documents, which would have cleared her to compete in competitive games, saw her sidelined longer than they had wanted.
“It’s unfortunate in terms of some of the matches we would have liked to have got her in previously. But some of the paperwork, and again, some of the things were outside of our control and outside of her control,” he explained.
ENGLAND PATHWAY
Wiegman, head coach of England, explained they had been closely following the defender’s career and felt now was the right time to hand her a call-up.
She said, coming off their 2025 Euro win, England are looking to begin a new cycle for their women’s programme and believes Hinds can be an asset for the future.
Hinds had recently made the move from Liverpool to Arsenal, but has only made a handful of appearances for the North London club.
“We have been following Taylor for a long time. Of course, she has gone through the pathway. She has a dual heritage. She’s eligible for us and we started having conversations.” Wiegman explained.
“We are in a new situation, we are going into a new cycle, qualify for the World Cup, hopefully, and then go to the World Cup. So I want to see talented players in some positions,” she continued.
DOOR STILL OPEN
Busby is hopeful Hinds will switch her allegiance back to Jamaica and insisted the door is still open to her inclusion.
He explained, with her upcoming England assignments being international friendlies, it will allow her to represent Jamaica, should she choose to do so.
“It is a friendly, so I think that’s where it comes in,” he said.
“As long as they continue to be friendlies, the same way the she played for us and be able to go back, is the same way that she would still be able to make that decision.”
In her absence, Busby is preparing for their upcoming international friendly against Trinidad set for October 28 in Port-of-Spain.
