Netball World Youth Cup: Young Sunshine Girls bow out in quarterfinals
Jamaica’s young Sunshine Girls crashed out of the Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar yesterday after they were brushed aside 85-33 by Australia in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Needing a win to advance to the semi-finals, Jamaica proved to be no match for the girls from Down Under. The Australians started a bit slowly but, once they got into their stride, there was little or no resistance from Jamaica. The winners led 21-9 after the first quarter and 40-15 at half-time. They continued to pile on the pressure in the third quarter and led 64-23.
In the final quarter, Jamaica actually had their best goal tally (10 for the quarter) but the Australians could not be stopped as they outscored the young Sunshine Girls 21-10 for a final scoreline of 85-33.
In other quarter-final games played yesterday, South Africa defeated Cook Islands 79-45; New Zealand got past Malawi 67-34; and England defeated Scotland 64-33.
Today’s semi-final match-ups are England versus New Zealand and Australia versus South Africa.
In ninth to 16th place ranking matches yesterday, Wales defeated Singapore 57-39; Malaysia beat Trinidad and Tobago 52-40; Fiji defeated Gibraltar 61-31; and Samoa beat Tonga 62-46.
