T&T’s Gilbert inks deal with Hungarian club
BUDAPEST, Hungary (CMC):
Trinidadian midfielder Dantaye Gilbert has signed a deal with Hungarian top flight club Nyiregyhaza Spartacus.
The 20-year-old Gilbert, who has fallen out of favour with Trinidad head coach Dwight Yorke and has not featured for the national side since May, will join Nyiregyhaza Spartacus six games into their 2025/26 season.
“The first impressions are very positive. I signed for a Hungarian team because I want to show myself in the first division. I know from the Hungarian championship that there are good teams, I want to prove myself,” Gilbert said, via the Nyiregyhaza Spartacus website.
“I met my teammates and they were very nice. I liked the environment, the stadium. I would like to help the team as much as possible and my goal is to achieve success together. I trust that I can help the team with goals and assists.”
Gilbert joined PSV Eindhoven’s youth team in September 2023 and spent two seasons with the club before his contract came to an end a couple of months ago.
In his two seasons with the Dutch club, Gilbert scored eight goals in more than 40 appearances.
Gilbert has made eight appearances for T&T and has featured four times under Yorke.
He last turned out for T&T at the invitational Unity Cup tournament in England with appearances against Jamaica and Ghana.
However, Gilbert has since been overlooked for World Cup qualifiers against St Kitts and Nevis and Costa Rica, as well as the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.
He has also not been included in T&T’s 26-man squad which will face Curacao in their first match of the final round of World Cup qualifying on September 5.
