NPAJ congratulates DePass for World Classic performance
PRESIDENT OF the National Powerlifting Association of Jamaica (NPAJ) Michael Blair has congratulated Sami DePass on finishing fourth in the women’s 76kg class at the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships.
In her second-ever appearance at the World Championships, DePass improved on her performance last year where she had finished seventh.
DePass finished behind Polish champion Agata Sitko, runner-up Karlina Tongotea of New Zealand and third-place Cranon Worford of the United States.
Blair said DePass’ performance is the result of continuous growth throughout her career and is a landmark achievement for powerlifting in Jamaica.
“Sami’s dedication to powerlifting is truly inspiring. Her steady growth over the years is a testament to her hard work and perseverance,” he said.
“Her bold steps and unwavering focus have earned her admiration and respect not only from her peers, but also from her coaches and the broader powerlifting community.
“Her recent fourth-place achievement is a significant milestone, marking a proud moment for Sami, the NPAJ, and Jamaica.”
Years of hard work
DePass entered the World Championships as the reigning national champion as well as the highest ranked in her class in the North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF).
Blair said DePass’ success is a result of her years of hard work after joining the NPAJ back in 2021.
“Sami DePass has been a remarkable force in the powerlifting community since joining the NPAJ on July 7, 2021,” he explained.
“Since that pivotal moment, Sami has consistently demonstrated her exceptional skills and determination, earning numerous medals. Her journey reflects a trajectory of continuous improvement and commitment to excellence.”
Blair said as DePass continues to shine on the global stage, her achievements will only bring more attention to the powerlifting community in Jamaica.
According to Blair, she stands an inspiration for other athletes as well as highlights the potential that exists in Jamaica.
“Powerlifting in Jamaica is often overshadowed by more mainstream sports, making achievements like Sami’s even more noteworthy,” he said.
“Her success brings much-needed recognition to the sport and highlights the potential of Jamaican athletes on the global stage. Sami’s accomplishments are celebrated within the powerlifting community, serving as a beacon of inspiration for other athletes.”
