Reggae Boyz make second late call ahead of Dominican Republic WCQ
ANOTHER LOCAL-BASED player has received a call-up to the Reggae Boyz squad to take on the Dominican Republic and Dominica in World Cup qualification action.
Cavalier’s Gadail Irving was yesterday announced as a replacement for Seattle Sounders defender Jon Bell, as the team ramps up their final preparations for the World Cup qualifiers.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has remained mum on the reason behind the squad update with Irving’s late call, the second in the last few days.
Irving is the second player to receive a late call-up in the last few days with Arnett Gardens talisman, Fabian Reid, also included.
Reid was brought in to replace New York Red Bulls striker Corey Burke.
Head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has previously said, that while there is international quality in his squad, he needed the Jamaica Premier League players to be playing well just for situations such as this.
Irving’s selection comes after a JPL title-winning season for the defender, who said he felt he performed well for Cavalier.
He was a key starter for the Kingston-based club throughout the season, finishing with two goals and six assists for the reigning champions.
He also featured heavily in their CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign.
The defender says his focus is on working towards making his debut for Jamaica, pointing out he had been waiting for a call for a long time.
“It feels good to be a part of this squad. I’ve been waiting for this call-up. I was so excited, so excited, words cannot explain how I feel,” he said.
“I think I had a very good season. Scoring two goals and six assists and the number of clean sheets and such. I’m looking to get my debut definitely.”
