#WC2023 | World Champs' 'hot seat' to ensure full lanes
The likelihood of empty lanes in a World Athletics Championship semi-final or final has been greatly diminished.
This after the world governing body announced, earlier today, the use of ‘hot seats’ ahead of qualification to semi-finals and finals.
According to World Athletics, athletes who fail to qualify for a semi-final or final will be ranked according to time or distance (the hot seat applies to all events). Therefore, the athlete with the best time or distance outside of the already qualified, can be put into the event if there are any withdrawals.
If the person with the best time or distance outside of the qualifiers is unable to take up a spot, that spot will go to the next best non-qualifier.
In the case of events on the track, there will be no re-drawing of lanes and the athlete with the hot-seat ticket will take over the absent lane.
