Cavalier wary of wounded Waterhouse
DESPITE THEIR superior start to the Jamaica Premier League (JPL), Cavalier coach Rudolph Speid is wary of struggling Waterhouse, who they face in the feature match of round 11 today at the Ashenheim Stadium (JC) at 5:30 p.m.
According to Speid, Waterhouse, who are ninth in the league on 13 points, with just four wins from 10 starts, are at their most dangerous now and he will not be taking them lightly.
“Waterhouse is wounded and desperate for points. I think they will see this game as the game to kick-start their surge back up the table, which I expect them to do at some point because they are a quality team, a quality organisation, with a quality coach.
CONSEQUENTIAL GAME
“So this will be one of the most consequential games we have because of the position they are in, and, when people’s backs are against the wall, they will fight and fight hard,” said Speid.
Cavalier have won their last three matches to climb to one point above Mount Pleasant at the top of the standings with 22 points, and Speid anticipates that this will make them an even bigger target.
“There is an added incentive to beat us because we are at the top. Everybody will come gunning for us.
“Momentum does not count for anything when you play a quality team like Waterhouse. It is going to be such a difficult game. They know what their struggles are, and every game is a new game. So we have to try and play like we have, because it is going to be hard and tough.
“But, all the games we play, we are always positive So we hope to play in the same way and get the same result,” he added.
Despite their defeat to Tivoli Gardens last Sunday, Waterhouse coach Marcel Gayle believes they are on the mend, and he expects his team to continue to improve.
“We are still in the first round. We have only played 10 games. We still have a few games remaining in the round, so we still have a long way to go.
“We still have some things to get better at and we are getting better and the team is now playing the type of football we want to play. So we just want to get it right,” said Gayle.
Though Waterhouse lost last week, they had a big 4-0 win over Harbour View the week before, and so there is merit to what both Gayle and Speid have said.
