Ja Open Golf: Cover in the driver’s seat
The 2019 champion of the Jamaica Open Golf tournament, Patrick Cover, looks set to seal another title following day two action of the 55th tournament which is currently under way at the Tryall Golf Club in Hanover.
Following up on his opening round bogey-free eight under par 64 on Sunday’s opening day, the American Cover followed that up with a three under par 69 on yesterday’s second day to take a seven-shot lead with an 11 under par total of 133 entering today’s final day.
Cover held his own through the opening holes while racking up six birdies towards the back nine until the par-four 17th hole where he had the only blemish of a triple bogey.
With 18 holes to go to wrap up another title, Cover says consistency will be key heading into the final round.
“I am just going to try and play a good round of golf because I think I have a pretty good lead. I will just try to keep it in play and keep making putts because I have been putting pretty great,” said Cover.
Defending champion Michael Maguire has continued his charge up the leaderboard, as he now occupies second place following his second round of one under par 71 to go with his opening round 69 for an overall total of four under par 140.
American Ryan Linton rounds out the top three following rounds of 68 and 73 for a three-under-par total of 141.
Jamaican pro golfer Wesley Brown fell to the back of the pack after being in third place on the opening day. The St Ann native followed up his opening round 69 with a five over par 77 to be tied for 15th place with a total of 146.
In the meantime, Justin Burrowes continues to lead the amateur section after carding a two under par 70 to go with his opening round 76 for an overall two over par total of 146.
Burrowes, who rattled in six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey, said the day two adjustments helped him tremendously to maintain his lead.
“I tightened up on the shots that I gifted away on day one and it worked, because I had six birdies and I really could have had eight or nine, because I played solid golf. All in all, today was much more positive,” said Burrowes.
St Ann native Zandre Roye is four shots back of Burrowes following rounds of 76 and 74, while William Knibbs is in third place with his 10 over-par total of 150.
