Five years after her last league title victory, national midfielder Tiffany Cameron says that it has made her cherish her latest success with Ferencvárosi Torna Club (FTC) of Hungary.

FTC captured their fourth Hungarian women’s league title on Thursday, defeating MTK Hungária FC 3-2 in the second leg of the championship final to win the series 6-2 on aggregate. Entering the second leg with a 3-0 lead, Cameron scored the second goal in the 22nd minute.

Cameron last enjoyed victory in 2016 during her only season with Israeli club FC Ramat HaSharon, helping the team capture their first-ever league title on the back of a season where she scored 35 league goals. Cameron said that she is happy to finally be back in the winner’s circle after her previous struggles since that 2016 win.

“It’s a relief to finally have a winners’ medal around my neck after five years, and I’ve been pleased to be around such talented and knowledgeable staff members and players,” Cameron told The Gleaner. “Being in a winning and competitive environment has made football much more enjoyable for me.”

Stability was one of the many reasons Cameron signed with FTC last August as her previous stints with Stabæk Fotball (Norway), Vittsjö GIK (Sweden), USV Jena, and Borussia Mönchengladbach (Germany) had her struggling for league survival. Three out of those four clubs were relegated, and she said that that affected her development.

Cameron said that she has, however, been able to evolve as a player during her first year in Hungary and has credited the team’s perseverance as they faced challenges because of injuries and COVID-19.

“Lifting the league title in my first season in Hungary was a cool experience and felt great knowing that my team went through some challenging times with injuries and the coronavirus, but we became stronger and more united because of this,” she said.

“I’ve learned some new skills and have improved both technically and tactically during my time here. In my opinion, it is never too late for a player to learn as long as they stay motivated and committed to their development as a player and person.”

FTC’s league win also completed a domestic double as they won their sixth Hungarian Cup on May 7, defeating Astra-ALEF HFC 5-1 in the final. The league title also secures qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League next season.

Having ended the wait for championship success, Cameron is now focused on national team duties as she is among the Reggae Girlz’s provisional 31-member squad that will play two international friendlies against Nigeria and the United States on June 10 and 13, respectively.

Cameron says that she is excited about returning to camp after more than a year of inactivity as well as the competition that the new England-based players will bring as they prepare for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, which start in November.
