The Ministry of Health and Wellness says there were no adverse events at the island’s health centres and hospitals today arising from the industrial action by doctors.
The ministry said this information was provided by the regional health authorities, which oversee the management of the island’s health centres and hospitals.
It noted that health facilities across Jamaica entered emergency mode today following doctors’ withdrawal of services, with priority given to patients presenting with life-threatening and other serious medical emergencies and patients already admitted to hospitals, including those in intensive care units.
According to the health ministry, the regional authorities noted that elective surgeries scheduled for today were cancelled and some patients were discharged.
At the same time, health centres will not offer extended hours today, it added.
The health ministry again reminded persons experiencing a medical emergency to proceed to the nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department without delay.
Meanwhile, persons on medication for chronic diseases should not allow their supply to run out and should collect refills early where possible.
Members of the public with non-urgent medical needs are encouraged to contact their hospital or health centre before visiting, while persons planning to visit a health facility for routine or non-emergency services are strongly encouraged to monitor the media and other official communication channels for updates on the operational status of these health facilities.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness said it will continue to provide updates as they become available.
