A probe has been launched by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) into the fatal shooting of a man by the police along the Spanish Town Bypass in St Catherine on Saturday.

The police have identified the deceased as Juwayne Powell, otherwise called ‘Fully Bad’ and ‘John Whip’, of Spanish Town.

According to police reports, about 6:12 p.m., they received information that a man armed with a gun was travelling from the Capture Land community towards the bypass.

A police team responded in an unmarked service vehicle and observed a man fitting the description in the vicinity of the Food For the Poor property.

The police reported that officers accosted the man and identified themselves, at which point he allegedly pulled a firearm and opened fire at them.

According to the police, the cops took evasive action and returned fire, during which the man was shot and injured.

The police said a .38 revolver loaded with four live rounds of ammunition and two spent casings was recovered from him.

The injured man was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
