Mico’s Dr Maureen Mullings-Nelson elected JTA president-elect designate

Veteran educator Dr Maureen Mullings-Nelson of The Mico University College has been elected President-Elect Designate of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) following the organisation's 2026 presidential election.

The election was held from June 15 to 19.

The other candidate was Dr Darien Henry of the Montego Bay Community College.

The JTA, in a release on Tuesday, said a total of 11,275 votes were cast by members across the island.

According to the preliminary count, Mullings-Nelson secured 6,967 votes, while Henry received 3,947 votes.

Having secured the highest number of votes, Mullings-Nelson, who is president of the Mico University College Staff Association and lecturer and training placement officer at the college, has been declared President-Elect Designate of the JTA.

She is expected to be officially proclaimed during the association's 62nd Annual Conference, which is scheduled to take place from August 17 to 19.

The JTA is one of the country's largest and most influential unions, representing more than 20,000 teachers in Jamaica.
