Fatal shootings by security forces climb to 278 - INDECOM
Information from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is indicating that the number of Jamaicans fatally shot by members of the security forces has climbed to 278.
This is greater than all of 2024, when INDECOM recorded 189 fatal shootings.
The figure of 278 fatalities is as of November 24.
So far this month, 24 fatalities have been recorded.
Last week, over a dozen men were killed in alleged confrontations with the police.
The incidents of fatal shootings occurred across several police divisions.
Several illegal firearms were reportedly recovered from the various incidents.
INDECOM says none of the operations involved the use of body-worn cameras.
Among the recent fatal shootings is that of the killing of three men along the Mandela Highway in St Catherine last Wednesday.
Investigators say that one of the men was a cop killer.
The INDECOM says 51 police officers have been charged following investigations into their actions.
