NEPA outlines measures to protect environment and wild animals as storm approaches

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is advising persons to undertake the necessary preparations to safeguard the environment and natural resources, including endemic species in their care, in light of the impending storm.

These measures include putting in place a sound containment system to secure hazardous waste and to ensure that there is sufficient capacity to prevent any discharge to the environment.

Additionally, beach operators are advised to make every effort to secure temporary structures and other portable assets away from the beach as severe weather systems are generally accompanied by high waves and storm surges which can result in coastal erosion.

NEPA is also urging entities and individuals who have been granted permission to possess wildlife that are protected under the Wild Life Protection Act or non-native species, to secure enclosures to prevent the escape of animals from their facility.

They are to ensure that they prune trees that are near to animal enclosures and, if possible, relocate them indoors to prevent injury or death from flood or fallen debris.

Persons living near areas that are known to experience crocodile sightings are advised to be on the lookout for these animals as they may become displaced after a heavy downpour.

NEPA says in such instances crocodiles typically return to their natural habitat and there is generally no cause for alarm.
