No major disaster in Manchester, St Mary, St Elizabeth
Manchester and St Elizabeth reported no flooding or any major incident arising from the passage of Tropical Storm Rafael yesterday.
At the same time, things were also rather calm in St Mary, according to Port Maria Mayor Fitzroy Wilson.
He told The Gleaner that there had been no reports of flooding, but a few land slippages were experienced.
However, he said, the reports suggested there was no impact to people’s homes or any injuries or loss of lives.
Wilson said, although none of the parish’s shelters were open, the shelter managers were on standby.
Keval Lewis, acting disaster coordinator for Manchester, had a similar story.
“We are experiencing moderate rainfall in some of the areas. However, I have not received any report of anything major. I have not received any reports of flooding,” she said.
Lewis said one shelter was opened Monday night at the B.B. Coke High School, but was closed on Tuesday morning after the only occupant left. That person has sought shelter as a precaution because of the Hurricane Beryl devastation a few months earlier.
Although the shelters are closed, she, too, said the managers were on standby.
