NWA implements safety measures on new six-lane Mandela Highway

Motorists traverse the six-lane Mandela Highway during construction.

The National Works Agency (NWA) says it will be implementing additional measures to reinforce pedestrian safety on the six-lane dual carriageway along the Mandela Highway, in St Andrew.

It says at midday tomorrow, the temporary pedestrian facilities including the pedestrian light and push button, at the Fresh River Bridge will be decommissioned.

Communication and customer services manager at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, explains that pedestrians will no longer be allowed to cross the highway.

Shaw says the change is being made to eliminate the added danger of persons who attempt to get across six lanes of fast-moving traffic.

Come tomorrow, pedestrians seeking to access either sides of the Mandela Highway, between Tom Cringle Drive and the Ferry Police Station, must use the overpass bridge at all times.

Public passenger vehicles, travelling from Kingston to Spanish Town, are advised to set down passengers near the overhead bridge, only after clearing the ramp located along the carriageway.

And pedestrians are advised to walk along the right side of the ramp and overpass bridge to get onto the service road, from which the community’s facilities, businesses and Tom Cringle Drive can be accessed. They will use the same route when returning to the westbound carriageway.

The NWA says the ramp, overpass bridge and service road have been designed with the necessary safety features inclusive of sidewalks, pedestrian crossings and guardrails.

All road users are being urged to obey the directions in the interest of safety and good order.
