The magisterial recount for the controversial St Mary South Eastern constituency is now underway in downtown Kingston under the watchful eyes of high-powered attorneys for both the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP).

Counting has just started.

The proceedings was adjourned for a short while to allow the presiding magistrate to consider a submission from the attorneys representing PNP candidate Dr Winston Green.

Green, who was declared the winner of the constituency after the official count, explained that the submission was for the magistrate to abandon the recount and accept the result of the returning officer.

"I'm expecting that she will see that there is no necessity to do that (recount)", Green explained.

However, the magistrate has dismissed the application and counting has now started.

At the end of the preliminary count in last Thursday's General Election, JLP candidate Dr Norman Dunn was declared the winner of the constituency by a 127-vote majority.

Green was, however, declared the winner by nine votes at the end of the official count on Saturday.

Director of Elections Orrette Fisher has blamed the turnaround on a "simple transposition error".

There is a strong police and military presence around the Sutton Street Resident Magistrate Court where the counting is taking place.
