Supremacy of God’s word

THE EDITOR, Madam:

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, many families in western parishes are facing painful loss – damaged homes, disrupted work, and deep uncertainty. As our communities begin the long work of recovery, we need more than repairs; we need compassion, humility, and hope.

The Old Testament book of Joel offers a helpful framework for such a moment. Joel describes national devastation and calls people not to blame one another, but to seek God sincerely: “Turn ye even to Me with all your heart” and “Rend your heart, and not your garments.” Disaster is not a licence for harsh judgement of victims. It is a summons for all of us to pray, to repent, and to serve.

We hear some people commenting and criticising our brothers and sisters in the west. Let us be reminded that God’s Word is supreme, and it commands us to show mercy, kindness, and practical help in times of distress.

Joel also gives hope to those who feel overwhelmed by loss. God promises, “I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.” Recovery will take time, but restoration is possible through God’s mercy and through the generosity of neighbours.

May we rebuild with unity, compassion, and faith.
