Cultivate culture of social responsibility
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I wish to commend Mr Ronald Thwaites for his thought-provoking article in The Gleaner, dated December 15, titled ‘Why Civility Matters’. The article aptly highlights the absence of civility in Jamaican leadership and urges us to reflect on our values and course-correct to foster a more compassionate and progressive society.
As Mr Thwaites emphasises, civility is not merely a nicety, but a necessity for building a just and equitable society. A key point he makes is that forming consciences – shaping our moral principles and sense of right and wrong – is a collective responsibility. Families, schools, and churches must work together to instil values like empathy, respect, and kindness, guiding individuals to contribute positively to society.
I agree that, by prioritising civility and shaping consciences, we can cultivate a culture of understanding and social responsibility. As we strive to “build back better and stronger”, let us heed Mr Thwaites’ call to action, aligning our words and actions to create a more caring and socially progressive Jamaica.
