Devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on small businesses

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on small businesses in the affected parishes across Jamaica.

Hurricane Melissa, which struck Jamaica’s western parishes on October 28, brought unthinkable levels of destruction and devastation. While the immediate focus was, understandably, on the safety and well-being of residents, the long-term economic consequences for small businesses cannot be ignored. Many businesses suffered significant damage to their physical premises, loss of premises, loss of inventory, and disruption of operations.

The impact extends beyond mere property damage. Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, providing jobs, enhancing our food security, supporting communities, and contributing to our unique identity as a country. When these businesses suffer, the entire community suffers. The closure of even a few small businesses can lead to job losses, reduced tax revenue, shortages of services, and a decline in the overall quality of life.

This support should include:

• Financial assistance: Grants and low-interest loans to help businesses repair damage and replace lost inventory.

• Tax relief: Temporary tax breaks to ease the financial burden on affected businesses.

• Streamlined permitting: Expedited permitting processes for repairs and rebuilding to minimise downtime.

• Community support: Encouraging residents to shop locally and support the businesses that are working to rebuild.

It is crucial that we come together as a community to support our small businesses during this difficult time. Their success is essential to the long-term prosperity and vitality of our beautiful country as we build back stronger.
