Reaffirm order, responsibility, and respect for parliamentary process

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The conduct displayed by the Leader of the Opposition during October 21 sitting of the House of Representatives represents a regrettable departure from the standards of dignity, discipline, and responsibility that should characterise our nation’s parliamentary proceedings.

In walking out of the House during a critical national briefing on the Government’s preparations for Tropical Storm Melissa, the Opposition demonstrated a troubling disregard for the Jamaican people, whose safety and welfare must always take precedence over partisan posturing.

The office of Leader of the Opposition is a constitutional one – a position intended to provide balance, constructive oversight, and responsible dissent within the democratic framework. It is not, however, a platform for disruption or political theatrics. Governance is earned through credibility, composure, and a demonstrated capacity for leadership under pressure.

The Speaker of the House, Juliet Holness, acted squarely within her authority in upholding order and ensuring adherence to parliamentary procedure. Her stewardship reflected a commitment to fairness and the integrity of the institution, even in the face of deliberate attempts to undermine decorum.

At a time when national unity and cooperation are most urgently required, the people of Jamaica deserve leadership that rises above division and ego. The Opposition’s actions today stand as a reminder that maturity in leadership is measured not by how loudly one protests, but by how steadfastly one serves the public good.

Members of Parliament, on both sides of the aisle, should recommit themselves to the principles of accountability, mutual respect, and the sacred duty of service to the Jamaican people.
