High time for Jamaica to get rid of Privy Council

Published:Monday | September 29, 2025 | 12:07 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am of the view that Prime Minister Holness did the correct thing in scrapping the Ministry of Legal and Constitutional Affairs. There is no need for a ministry to deal with the changing of our Constitution. Furthermore, as I said in a letter to you last month, there can be no true independence unless we remove the Privy Council.

The Prime Minister’s decision presents an opportunity for the constitutional process to be restarted, and the removal of the Privy Council placed on the agenda. Jamaica requires it. As I have repeatedly pointed out over the years, there is no need for a referendum to get rid of the anachronistic Privy Council.

It is high time for Jamaica to become independent.
