Time to move forward
THE EDITOR, Madam:
No right-minded person can defend slavery. Britain and others who, along with the African countries, SOLD their brothers into slavery are culpable. But do we ask the African countries for an apology?
In casting blame, have we forgotten the positive things that Britain did for this island nation?
Have we forgotten the establishment of the finest civil service in the region?
Have we forgotten the establishment of the experimental farm at Hope Gardens, which made Jamaica one of the richest countries in the world in terms of flora and fauna?
Have we forgotten the preferential trade agreements for sugar and bananas?
Tearing down statues and renaming streets can neither change nor erase history.
The Jamaican people have come a very long way since the days of slavery, creating icons in the professions, in sports, and in every discipline of the arts. There is much to be proud of, so let us continue to go forward in a positive way.
