Miller banks on track record for second term
St Catherine South Eastern Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Miller has expressed confidence that his performance over the past five years has eset him on a course to a second term in office.
Speaking at the official media launch of his re-election campaign on Monday, Miller outlined a series of infrastructural and social development projects he claims have transformed the constituency under his stewardship.
“I have been on the job. I have been doing my work. We have given everyone connectivity through public Wi-Fi, making sure the students have Internet to do their work,” Miller stated, highlighting efforts to enhance digital access and educational support.
Miller, who pulled off a surprise victory over former PNP MP Colin Fagan in the 2020 general election, believes the record is clear and in his favour.
“I can proudly say that in the five years that I have been the member of parliament, I have done far more than the more than 30 years that the Opposition had the reins of the constituency,” he declared.
He pointed to the resurfacing of several long-neglected roads in areas such as Robinson Close, Portmore Gardens, and Myrtle Way – some of which had not seen repairs in over four decades. He also cited the revitalisation of the Bridgeport and Waterford business complexes.
Other major achievements he listed include the opening of a Youth Information Centre; the construction of an 11-classroom block at Bridgeport High School, which eliminated the shift system last September; and fencing works in progress at the Bridgeport Primary School.
Miller added that additional infrastructure work has been done under the Government’s Legacy Programme in communities such as Portsmouth and Westmeade.
He said that delays to road repairs in Westchester and Cumberland are tied to issues within the Portmore Municipal Corporation despite funds being available.
Looking ahead, Miller said his second term would focus on the construction of the Waterford Health Centre, the establishment of a ferry system connecting Portmore to Kingston and Port Royal, and transforming Port Henderson Road into an ecotourism destination.
“We have some informal settlements in the constituency,” he added, “so we want to ensure that in the next term we formalise the issues of titles that plague residents.”
Miller is expected to face off against the PNP’s Dr Alfred Dawes in the upcoming general election.
