Residents of Buxton Town, Wakefield, are mourning the brutal predawn attack on a couple in which a woman was hacked to death and her partner wounded.

Dead is Madeline O’Sullivan, otherwise called ‘Mumus’, a 63-year-old labourer of the St Catherine district of Buxton Town, 3.5 kilometres (2.2 miles) northwest of Linstead.

Reports are that about 1 a.m. Thursday, the couple heard strange sounds outside their home. The husband opened a door to the three-room board structure dwelling and sustained injuries to his face and upper body.

Mrs O’Sullivan suffered multiple chop wounds.

They were assisted to the Linstead Hospital where Madeline succumbed to the injuries and her husband was admitted.

The O’Sullivans lived alone and burn coal as their means of income.

Residents of the rural farming community were almost in denial Thursday as they reflected on the gruesomeness of the attack.

“Mi still can’t believe that dem things is happening inside the community,’’ Manley Dorma told The Gleaner.

“Something is wrong, as she don’t trouble people and dem murder her.’’

A Nissan motor car used to transport coal was still parked in the yard Thursday afternoon.

Michelle Bascoe, 50, was philosophical as she reflected on the increasing incidence of crime in the district. She has lived in Buxton Town all her life and said “it is the worst I have seen this community”.

“They attack the people without any reason, but it is not over, as God will repay the killers,’’ she said.

Thursday’s incident was not isolated, as residents said that a senior citizen was attacked more than a week ago.

‘’The community is still recovering from the rape of an 84-year-old woman last week after criminal/s kicked off her door and assaulted her. The police are still investigating that matter and now one woman dead and her husband in hospital,’’ Doreen Miller said.

The matter is being investigated by the Linstead police in the St Catherine North Division, which has so far recorded 14 murders in 2022.
