JPS says trained engineers leaving the company but did not contribute to blackout

President and chief executive officer of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), Kelly Tomblin, is reporting that the light and power company has been losing many of its trained engineers.

But she says Saturday’s all-island power outage was not as a result of the company’s engineering capacity.
 

According to Tomblin, the JPS has been strengthening its technical team in response to the exodus of its trained engineers.

She was responding to questions about the islandwide blackout on Saturday, the second blackout in four months.

The JPS last night submitted to the Energy Minister, Andrew Wheatley, a preliminary report on the weekend power outage.

Wheatley, who was furious about the blackout demanded a preliminary report for today and a final report for Thursday.

He said the blackout, which the JPS said was linked to a procedural error, was unacceptable and should not have happened.
