2025 Mazda CX-90: A First-hand Review
The CX-90 represents a significant evolution in Mazda’s SUV line-up. While it shares the three-row configuration with its predecessor, the CX-9, the CX-90 boasts a longer wheelbase, providing enhanced interior space. This is a vehicle designed with executives and families in mind, offering a compelling combination of comfort, style, and performance. The CX-90 is a full-size crossover SUV, a segment that’s becoming increasingly competitive, and Mazda is aiming high.
Outside: Kodo Design Evolved
Mazda’s Kodo design language is evident in the CX-90, but it’s been refined and evolved. The front fascia is bold, with a distinctive grille that commands attention. The headlights are sleek and sharp, contributing to an assertive presence. The character lines along the body panels flow elegantly, creating a sense of motion even when the vehicle is stationary. The rear of the vehicle is equally stylish, with a sophisticated design that avoids the boxy look often associated with three-row SUVs.
Compared to the CX-60, the CX-90 is noticeably larger, especially in length. The CX-60 is a two-row mid-size SUV, whereas the CX-90’s full-size crossover SUV body provides significantly more passenger and cargo space, making it a more practical choice for larger families or those who need to haul more. The proportions are also different; the CX-90 has a longer bonnet and a more stretched-out silhouette.
Interior: Spacious and Refined
Stepping inside, the CX-90 immediately feels spacious. The longer wheelbase translates to a more comfortable cabin, particularly for second-row passengers. The interior is swathed in Nappa leather, which feels luxurious to the touch.
The seats are not only comfortable but also offer a welcome feature: cooling. In my opinion, cooled seats should be standard with any leather upholstery, and Mazda delivers here. The driver’s seat includes memory settings, but what truly impressed me was the facial recognition system. This technology automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors to the driver’s saved preferences, a feature that adds a touch of high-tech convenience.
Practicality is also well addressed. I appreciated the wireless charging pad located conveniently below the climate controls, making it easy to keep devices charged on the go.
The audio experience is delivered through a 12-speaker Bose system, providing rich and immersive sound. The infotainment system is centered around a 10.24” display, controlled by Mazda’s central dial system. This system, which has remained consistent over the years, is one of the most intuitive and user-friendly systems I’ve encountered.
As mentioned, the longer wheelbase benefits second-row passengers, providing ample foot space. Cargo space is also a key consideration in this segment. The CX-90 offers 15.9 cubic feet of space with the third row up, and that expands to a generous 40 cubic feet with the third row folded down.
Driving Experience: Balanced Performance
The 3.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers 340 horsepower, but the power comes on smooth and gradual rather than aggressive. This makes the CX-90 excellent for hauling loads, providing a sense of confidence and control.
Given its size, the vehicle does feel substantial, but this translates to a feeling of stability on the road. One feature that proved particularly useful during my time with the CX-90 was the Smart City Brake Support, both front and rear. This system helps prevent collisions while reversing or moving forward at low speeds. It came in handy when I was parking, allowing me to get very close to the curb with confidence.
The mild hybrid system is a notable feature. It enhances fuel efficiency without compromising the driving experience or adding complexity to ownership. The weight distribution of the vehicle feels well balanced, contributing to confident and effortless cornering.
The Mazda CX-90 competes in a crowded segment, facing rivals such as the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade. Each of these competitors offers its own strengths, but the CX-90 distinguishes itself with its blend of premium design, engaging driving dynamics, and advanced technology.
