The BMW X3 has carved a distinct niche for itself in the competitive luxury compact SUV segment. This third-generation model continues to refine the formula, blending athleticism with everyday practicality. I recently spent time with the 2025 BMW X3 20 xDrive, and here are my impressions.

Outside:

The lines are sharper and give the vehicle a more angular look, lending it a sportier stance. While not as demonstrative as the X5, the X3 is still very imposing. The front grille, while still growing on me, does bear a resemblance to the electric iX, perhaps a bit too much for some tastes. Thankfully, the adaptive LED headlights and the body panels cut a sharp and modern figure.

My test vehicle was finished in Alpine White, a classic choice that emphasises the car’s sculpted lines. Riding on 19 M Light Alloy Wheels, the X3 exudes a confident presence. This was evident whenever I was at a stoplight and the men who whipped windshields came flocking to the vehicle.

Interior:

The interior is a masterclass in modern luxury. The Panorama Glass Roof fills the cabin with natural light, creating an airy and spacious feel. In addition, the Dark Graphite interior décor provides a sophisticated backdrop.

Ambient Interior Lights add a touch of sophistication as there are multiple colours to choose from. BMW does a good job of allowing owners to personalise as many things as possible, from the light to the position of the seat.

The driver’s seat offers excellent adjustability, including memory settings, ensuring optimal ergonomics. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a 14.9-inch touchscreen display, part of the curved display system that also incorporates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. The interface is intuitive and user-friendly, with crisp graphics and smooth responsiveness. Be warned: with all the options that BMW offers, using the display does come with a learning curve.

The steering wheel itself can be adjusted for both height and reach, further enhancing driver comfort, and it has the customary mounting controls.

Driving Experience:

Powered by a TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder inline petrol engine, the X3 delivers brisk performance. With 208 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque, the engine feels nippy, effortlessly propelling the vehicle forward. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and seamlessly, maximising efficiency.

While you can hear the turbocharger spool up when accelerating, the cabin remains remarkably quiet. The suspension, a highlight for me, effectively isolates occupants from road imperfections. Even on our notoriously pothole-ladened roads of the corporate area, the X3 handled them with admirable composure.

Fuel Economy and Practicality:

Fuel economy proved to be impressive, with an average of 14.4 km/100l during my test drive. This places the X3 among the more fuel-efficient vehicles in its class.

The X3 offers a generous amount of cargo space, and the inclusion of an emergency spare wheel in the trunk which was a welcomed surprise for me.

The 2025 BMW X3 comes standard with a comprehensive suite of advanced safety features, including Parking Assistance System and lane departure warning.

The 2025 BMW X3 20 xDrive successfully blends sporty handling, refined comfort, and cutting-edge technology. While the styling might not be to everyone’s taste, there’s no denying the X3’s overall appeal. It is a well-rounded package that delivers a rewarding driving experience while remaining practical for everyday use.
