WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Own your choices: Own your life

Published:Sunday | September 28, 2025 | 12:09 AM

Many times in life, we feel trapped, as if we have no choice but to go along with circumstances or people. We blame situations, people, or fate, thinking they forced us into what we are going through.

This belief often brings temporary relief — because, if others are to blame, then we are not responsible for our quality of life. That temporary freedom quickly delivers consequences. In truth, even in the most difficult moments, it is we who are making choices — consciously or unconsciously.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

Life brings situations, both expected and unexpected, but what we make out of them is our choice. A challenge can either make us stronger or leave us feeling like a victim. True empowerment begins when we start taking responsibility for our choices, whether good or bad. Even when you make a wrong choice - own it.

Learn to accept your mistakes, because only then can you fully claim your strengths. If you choose to retaliate or wait for others to fail — it is still your decision. Wrong choices will bring unpleasant results, but acknowledging them teaches growth and maturity.

Blaming others only keeps us in illusion. It is easy to think, “They harmed me, so they must fix it.” The truth is, no one else can fix it for us. Our peace — or our suffering — is always the result of our choices.

CHOOSE DIFFERENTLY AND WISELY

Who would consciously choose pain? No one. Yet, by refusing to take ownership, we indirectly choose it. Sometimes, people even seek attention through their pain. When we say, “I am in pain because of them,” we give away our power. But when we realise “I am in pain because I chose this reaction”, we discover the power to choose differently. This awareness is liberating — it removes most of the weight from our problems.

When we consciously observe our choices — what to hold on to, what to let go of, and how to respond — life feels lighter. Every situation, no matter how difficult, becomes an opportunity to grow rather than a reason to suffer.

THE ILLUSION OF NO CHOICE

Our life today is the outcome of countless small choices made knowingly or unknowingly. If we choose with awareness, we shape a life filled with peace, growth, and fulfilment. If we remain in illusion, we continue to repeat patterns of blame and disappointment.

The path to freedom is simple: be mindful of your choices. Let go of what doesn’t serve you and choose what brings peace. When you accept responsibility, you no longer wait for others to change your life — you become the one shaping it.

In every moment, remember this truth: you always have a choice.
