WISDOM OF THE WEEK

Embody the International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace, celebrated on September 21, is a reminder of humanity’s shared dream: a world free from conflict, hatred, and division. Yet, peace is not just a global agenda. It is a personal practice. If we truly want a peaceful world, we must begin with “an individual way of peaceful living”. Peace is not built overnight, but it begins within ourselves.

PEACE WITHIN THE SELF

Inner peace is the foundation for establishing peace in other areas of life. Many people live in constant conflict with themselves — always comparing, always chasing, and dissatisfied with who they are in the moment. This inner struggle becomes the root of restlessness.

True peace starts with acceptance. Accepting our current state, whether intense or imperfect, brings calm to the inner being. Growth is possible only when we embrace where we are and then move forward. The journey towards higher goals becomes smoother when we stop fighting with ourselves. A peaceful self shines like a steady lamp, guiding us through life with balance and clarity.

PEACE IN RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships often lose their harmony when we expect others to change or conform to our way of living. The truth is that each person has the right to live by their own values and choices. What is “right” for one may not be the same for another. Forcing others only creates resistance and conflict.

The key to peace in relationships is freedom. We can share our opinions and values, but we must also allow others to decide for themselves and live with the results of their choices. Respecting perspectives, even when they differ from ours, keeps love alive and prevents unnecessary conflicts. A simple mantra can guide us here: “Let people be.” When we give others the space to be themselves, we create a natural atmosphere of peace and understanding.

PEACE IN THE WORLD

Looking at the state of the world, it is easy to feel powerless. Battles, injustice, and inequality surround us. But peace in the world begins with individuals choosing peace in their daily lives. Every peaceful thought — whether prioritising positivity, being non-judgemental, offering kindness, listening with empathy, or spreading hope — contributes to the larger picture.

Even if darkness covers 90 per cent, the remaining light still exists. By focusing on that light and helping it expand, we contribute to creating a brighter world. One small thought of peace, multiplied across millions of people, has the power to change the global story.

On this International Day of Peace, let us not only mark the day with words but embody it in our actions. Peace is not distant. It begins here and now — with me and with you.

“A peaceful world is built by peaceful individuals.”
