For Plaid Puma, storytelling has always been at the heart of her creative journey. “In high school, I used to handwrite entire composition books, creating stories that filled my world,” she shared. It wasn’t until later that anime showed her the power of combining words and art to bring entire realities to life.

Her creative process is rooted in everyday inspiration. “It could be something I heard, a meme, or even a show I’m watching. I start with a sketch and build the artwork as I go.” Influences like One Piece, Witch Hat Atelier, and Ichi the Witch have shaped her style. “The layers in One Piece are incredible. It’s a story that pulls you deeper the more you explore it.”

As Jamaica’s anime scene grows, Plaid Puma is excited about the shift. “We need more subcultures — more geeks, nerds, and people expressing themselves. Self-expression is life.” She credits communities like Anime Nerds of Jamaica (ANJ) for providing support and a sense of belonging. “Without my community, I might have given up. ANJ reminded me that I wasn’t alone in my interests.”

CHALLENGES

Of course, the journey hasn’t been without challenges - from finding well-paying creative jobs to overcoming self-doubt. “You just have to take it day by day. It’s tough, but persistence gets you through.” One of her most meaningful works, Imagination, is a reminder to stay curious and creative even in uncertain times.

When asked what she is most excited for at Anime Picnic, her answer was simple: “The cosplayers! I love seeing the effort they put into their outfits. It’s inspiring.” Her advice to aspiring illustrators? “Stay true to your style. You don’t have to create a masterpiece. Just create what feels authentic to you.”

Plaid Puma’s journey reflects the strength of Jamaica’s creative community and the power of art to inspire. As Anime Picnic approaches, itis stories like hers that remind us why spaces like these matter.

Jamaica’s biggest outdoor anime convention, Anime Picnic, is set to return for its 10th edition on April 26 at Hope Zoo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s theme - Acropolis – Gods of Olympus - promises an immersive celebration of anime, cosplay, and creativity.
