Is ‘will’ a power?

Published:Sunday | March 2, 2025 | 12:09 AM

We have all heard the saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Many of us mistake will for desire. However, not all desires hold power. Willpower is something much deeper, a force that shapes our lives and decisions.

WILL VS DESIRE

Willpower is the driving force that helps us stay disciplined, consistent, and focused on our goals. It strengthens our inner resolve and gives us the ability to overcome obstacles. It is the mental strength to control or regulate desires. It is the ability to resist temptations, stay disciplined, and pursue long-term goals despite challenges. For example, if I have the will to maintain harmony in my relationships, I will be aware of what causes disharmony and work towards restoring peace.

On the other hand, desire often relates to external achievements, making the mind restless and unstable. Desires arise from emotions, instincts, or external influences and often push us toward what feels good or satisfying at the moment. For example, if I desire fame, my thoughts may become scattered, leading to insecurity and dissatisfaction. Unlike willpower, desire is driven by impulse rather than conscious effort, often leaving us feeling unfulfilled and disappointed in external factors.

RECOGNISING YOUR WILLPOWER

We all possess an inner strength that can help us achieve our aspirations. However, the impact of willpower depends on how it is used. When applied to personal growth and the well-being of others, it multiplies. But when driven by selfish motives or negative intentions, it weakens. Negative thoughts create confusion, doubt, and frustration, making it difficult to make the right decisions.

HARNESSING THE POWER WITHIN

To use willpower, we must pause and turn inward. Check: Are our thoughts positive and constructive, or do they carry selfish motives that could harm others? By assessing the quality of our thoughts, we can decide whether to nurture or discard them. When we follow progressive thoughts, our will naturally guides us toward the right path.

However, if our will turns into a desire, we experience instability, impatience, and frustration. These are signs indicating that we need to transform desire back into willpower. Awareness of this distinction helps us maintain inner peace and clarity. Desires are like waves in the ocean, constantly shifting, while willpower is like the lighthouse that helps you stay on course.

The difference between both lies in intention, control, and the energy they generate. Willpower creates stability while desires lead to inner turmoil. Use willpower to override desires. By being mindful of this difference, we ensure that willpower serves as a guiding force, leading us towards a fulfilling and peaceful life.
