Defiant Scorpions drag themselves back against Pride

Day two of the West Indies Championship clash between the Jamaica Scorpions and Barbados Pride belonged to no one but the cricketing gods.
In a gripping contest that ebbed and flowed under the blistering St Catherine sun, the Scorpions reached 275 for six at stumps, still trailing the Pride’s first-innings total of 348 by 73 runs.
Resuming on a cautious 17 without loss, the overnight pair of captain John Campbell and Kirk McKenzie gave the home side a promising platform.
The duo brought up a 50-run partnership off 87 balls, settling any early nerves among the sparse home crowd.
Campbell, however, never truly found his rhythm. Despite striking three fours and two sixes, he looked uncharacteristically bogged down during his 52-ball stay.
His patience finally snapped on 34, chipping a tame delivery from Kyle Mayers straight to Johann Layne. The Pride had their first breakthrough with the score on 65.
McKenzie and Carlos Brown steadied the ship, nudging the total to 93 before another soft dismissal hurt the Scorpions.
McKenzie, who had looked composed for his 31, fell just before lunch, caught off the bowling of Joshua Bishop.
After the interval, home boy Carlos Brown decided that if someone were to carry the innings, it would be him.
Playing with a maturity beyond his years, Brown absorbed pressure and punished the many loose balls from the Bajan attack.
He brought up his half-century off 129 balls, in a chiselled knock which featured six elegant fours.
A 47-run stand with Javelle Glenn, who made 18, carried the Scorpions to 140 before Glenn was trapped plumb in front by Layne, playing around a straight one.
Tea was taken at 177 for four, with the contest finely poised.
But the resumption proved cruel for the hosts. Brown, on a fighting 61, fell immediately after the break, caught behind off wily left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, who got one to spin off the dry surface.
The dismissal opened a crack, and Abhijai Mansingh’s gritty 15 was ended in spectacular fashion, a brilliant direct hit from Jonathan Drakes, leaving the Scorpions reeling at 211 for six.
With the innings in danger of disintegrating, St Catherine CC player Peat Salmon walked to the crease.
Alongside Romaine Morris, the pair produced the most defiant partnership of the day.
Sharing an unbroken 64-run stand for the seventh wicket, they batted through the evening session with discipline and determination.
At stumps, Salmon was unbeaten on 38, having cracked seven fours, while Morris remained steady on 35 with three boundaries. Warrican has been the pick of the Pride bowlers so far, returning figures of two for 40.
