UTech president wants end to TVET stigma

WESTERN BUREAU: Dr Kevin Brown, president of The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), has joined calls for an end to the stigma that currently exists against technical and vocational education and training (TVET) subjects in Jamaica’s education system, saying these subjects are key to becoming a technological leader on the global stage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday handed down a sentence of 15 years in prison to a woman who pleaded guilty to selling actor Matthew Perry the ketamine that killed him in 2023. “You’re going to have to show some epic resilience,” Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett said to Jasveen Sangha, echoing the defendant’s words earlier in the hearing about her self-improvement.
Police in the Bahamas arrest husband of US woman who vanished from boat
Police in the Bahamas said late Wednesday they have arrested the husband of a United States woman who was aboard a boat near the archipelago and vanished. Authorities said the 59-year-old man whom they did not identify was arrested in Abaco and is being questioned. A Coast Guard spokesperson told The Associated Press late Wednesday that they have opened a criminal investigation into the case. Police did not provide further details, including whether or not he was charged. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Former Director of West Indies Petroleum Limited (WIPL) John Levy and his wife, Donna May Levy, have been freed of criminal charges surrounding a motor vehicle, asserting that they were subjected to “cooked-up” allegations. The charges were dismissed in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on April 1. The Court Administration Division (CAD) confirmed the dismissal of the case.

Education Ministry pushes back at claims about inappropriate behaviour at school shelters
The Ministry of Education has stated that it has received no official reports of inappropriate behaviour by individuals sheltering at schools, following allegations made by Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) President Mark Malabver. Speaking yesterday at the first day of the JTA’s 2026 education conference Malabver said that the association has received reports of students and teachers being unable to use their classrooms where shelterees engage in unsavoury activities while occupying the buildings.

WESTERN BUREAU: Linvern Wright, the principal of William Knibb High School, says governments over the years have failed to provide adequate sports facilities for athletes in western Jamaica, leaving them at a significant disadvantage to athletes from the Corporate Area, who are exposed to high-quality facilities. In a Facebook post last Thursday, during the staging of the annual ISSA Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championship (Champs), Wright described the strong political presence at the high-school showpiece as “shameless”.

GAP refinances US$95.5m loan backing Jamaica, Mexico airport operations
The Pacific Airport Group (GAP), the Mexican airport operator that manages two of Jamaica’s international airports, has refinanced a “US$95.5 million bank loan” that matured on March 19, rolling the debt into a new short-term facility with the same lender, BBVA México. “The new loan has a six-month term, with the option to extend for an additional six months, with interest payable monthly at a variable rate equivalent to Secured Overnight Financing Rate plus 40 basis points,” stated GAP in its filings.
