PM in good spirits as doctors continue evaluations

St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew says he remains in “good spirits” and in stable condition as doctors in South Florida continue to assess his health following reports that he suffered a stroke.

In a five-minute national address on yesterday, Drew said he had first been treated in Martinique before travelling to the United States for further tests. He did not disclose a diagnosis.

“I remain in good spirits, getting fully active, fully conscious, and in stable condition as these evaluations continue,” said Drew, 49.

Martinique media earlier reported that the prime minister had suffered a stroke but was not expected to suffer any lasting effects.

Drew said he sought medical attention after developing persistent nausea, vomiting, neck pain, a mild headache, dizziness and difficulty with balance.

“My wife and I travelled here on the advice of medical specialists in St Kitts and Nevis as well as specialists in Martinique so that further investigations could be conducted. At this stage there is nothing alarming to report but the doctors are continuing their investigations and I believe it is important that they are allowed to be thorough,” he said.

The prime minister thanked well-wishers for their support and urged people not to ignore warning signs about their health.

“This experience has been a wake-up call for me, and I hope it can also serve as a reminder to each of you that health matters,” Drew said.

He also expressed gratitude to medical personnel in St Kitts and Nevis, Martinique and the United States, saying he was recovering well and would provide a further update once evaluations are complete.

“Thank you once again for the tremendous outpouring of love, concern and praise. My family and I are deeply grateful. May God continue to bless each and every one of you and may He continue to bless our beloved Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis,” Drew said.
