LIVERPOOL, England (AP):
Fleetwood Town’s reward for upsetting Arsenal in the English League Cup will be a home quarterfinal clash against Everton.
Everton became the last team to book their place in the last eight after brushing aside Newcastle 3-1 yesterday, with the match watched by the club’s most famous fan, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
Awaiting Everton are Fleetwood, the fourth-tier minnows who have become the talk of English football after eliminating Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, in a penalty shoot-out to produce one of the most stunning results in the competition’s 66-year history.
Goals from midfielders James Garner and Hayden Hackney gave Everton control in the first half before forward Thierno Barry added a third midway through the second. Newcastle reduced the deficit in the 88th minute through defender Dan Burn’s header.
Everton barely missed star winger Jack Grealish, who was dropped from the squad by manager David Moyes as punishment for reportedly skipping training this week.
The draw for the quarterfinals was made on Wednesday. The other matchups will see Manchester City host third-tier Bradford City, Liverpool face Bournemouth at Anfield, and Sunderland travel to Crystal Palace.
Those matches will be played during the week beginning December 14.
