A common-law couple was arrested and charged on Tuesday after a quantity of cocaine was allegedly discovered at their premises in Huddersfield, St Mary.
They are John Edwards and Sonia Burgess, both 63, who are jointly charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, and using premises to store cocaine.
The police said the seizure was made during a joint, intelligence-driven operation conducted by the police and military in the area.
According to the police, the operation was conducted between 3:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and involved members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force and was aimed at dismantling criminal networks.
“The operation targeted wanted persons, persons of interest, and other individuals believed to be involved in criminal activities,” said Superintendent Anthony Wallace, head of the St Mary Police Division.
“It was also aimed at recovering illegal firearms, ammunition, stolen property and other contraband. The operation resulted in the arrest and charge of four persons including a common-law couple, following the seizure of approximately three pounds of cocaine at their apartment,” Wallace said.
Meanwhile, it is understood that a 36-year-old electrician, Christopher Sterling, and 23-year-old Devante Duncan were also arrested and charged in connection with the possession of identity information during the operation.
Wallace pointed out that the operation forms part of a broader strategy to maintain sustained pressure on criminals and violence producers, particularly in communities affected by recent violent incidents, including break-ins, lottery scamming, and other unlawful activities.
“The St Mary police remain resolute in their commitment to apprehending criminal elements and dismantling criminal networks to safeguard law-abiding citizens throughout the parish,” Wallace said.
