A man was fatally shot by the police during an alleged confrontation in the community of Clayton Heights in Spanish Town, St Catherine on Tuesday.

He has been identified as Kevin Maitland, otherwise called ‘Nachilous’ and ‘Big Head’, of a St John's Road address.

The police said a gun was seized.

According to the police, about 6:00 p.m., a team was on foot patrol in the community, which is located along St John's Road, when a group of men whose presence aroused suspicion was observed.

The police say the team identified itself, and the men reportedly ran in different directions.

According to the police, Maitland reportedly brandished a firearm and fired several shots at the cops.

The police took defensive action and returned fire, hitting him.

When the shooting subsided, Maitland was found with a gun beside him, the police reported.

The police say the weapon was examined and found to be a Glock 17 pistol fitted with a magazine containing two rounds of ammunition.

He was assisted to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The matter is being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations.
